Selecting a processor can be difficult.

What you need today may be not what you need tomorrow.

Newer programs, games and applications come out every day that require larger processors with more power to make them work properly.

It is hard to see what will come out next year, or the year after or even three years down the track, so don’t sell yourself short.

Generally the larger the processor that you select the longer the computer will last.

The "K" Processor allows you to over clock the speed of the CPU, basically rev it harder to get better performance.

NB. It is very easy to upgrade other components of a computer like Ram, Hard Disk and Video Card but not so easy to upgrade the CPU.

MMO games like WOW, Guild wars 2, GTA5, Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls online depend heavily on CPU. If MMO's are your thing than the processor is the most important thing to address.

RPG's like Blackguards 2, The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Battlefield 1 depend heavily on GPU (Graphics Card) so reviewing GPU performance is what we recommend here.

Of course there are exceptions like Panetside 2 which is FPS MMO which relies heavliy on CPU for graphics shading and GPU for massive frame rendering so don't sell yourself short, if you get stuck just ask us.

This is a good website for comparing CPU performance.

VR - the next generation of PC gaming currently is bottlenecked by GPU because they are generally FPS based games. Multiplayer is going to be extremely popular within VR community, having a beefy CPU should be a requirement if you are considering what is down the track. It is always easier to upgrade a GPU than what it is to upgrade a CPU.

SLI is running 2 or more graphics cards together for better performance, higher frame rates etc, but the question is will you get better performance?

A graphics card (GPU) communicates with the processor by PCI lanes and a modern GPU uses 16 lanes.

All current LGA 1151 Processors including i3, i5, i7-7700 and i7 7700k can only support up to 16 PCI lanes

See the i7-7700k Graphics specifications from Intel: ark-intel.com processor

If you have 1x GPU it will use all 16 PCI lanes available but when you add a second card the 16 lanes are shared between the 2 GPU's, hence each card will only utilise 8 lanes each, essentially halving each cards potentional.

If you are still considering SLI than we would suggest that you consider a system with an X99 chipset and an LGA 2011-v3 motherboard. Review the Maxi-i7 Ultra tower.

  Intel® CPU Thermal Solution (default)

  Genuine Intel Water Cooling +$149

  • Better thermal transfer of heat between components and the cooling system.
  • Increased system life because of cooler operation.
  • Reduced noise because not as many fans are needed.
  • Cooler components will work better and last longer.
  • Greater over clocking capability.
  • Reduced internal dust build up.
  • Corsiar Liquid Cooler +$139

    Battlefield 4

The graph shows total ram used as well as average minimum and maximum frame rate.

    ARMA 3

The graph shows total ram used as well as average minimum and maximum frame rate.

    Adobe Premier

The graph shows Adobe Premier encoding a 1 minute 4K project as well as time to open a 40Gb project.

There was only a 15 second difference between 32Gb of ram compared to 8Gb ram and only a 12 second improvement from 8Gb to 16Gb ram. When opening a 40Gb project 16Gb ram opened the file in almost half the time as 8Gb and 32Gb opened the project 75% faster than 16Gb,

    Adobe After Effects

The graph shows the time in seconds to encode a 5 second sequence.

With Adobe After Effects final videos are not ram intensive so more ram is not of a real advantage. When it comes to real time previews the more ram you have the better but when encoding ram makes little difference.

480Gb SSD (Solid State Drive), R/W 500Mb/s (default)

      960Gb SSD (Solid State Drive), R/W 530Mb/s +$139

      2Tb SSD (Solid State Drive), R/W 540Mb/s+$799

      500Gb M.2 (Solid State Drive), R/W 3500/2100Mb/s +$289

Imagine loading into Windows in around 20 seconds! A solid state hard allows you to achieve this. The limit of course is the size, if this is an issue simply add a secondary drive. A standard Hard Disk works fine for storage

Solid state hard disk drives (SSD's) can make everything happen at about 5x faster , this has been the biggest advance in speed since, well, anything!

SSD's are not only 5x faster but they use less power, make no noise, are extremely reliable and last significantly longer.

With online gaming you can generally tell who has an SSD because they are on the map the FIRST!

    • Rule No1, the faster information moves from the hard disk into the ram the faster your computer is.
    • A standard Hard Disk usually transfers information at 100MBps and a SSD can be about 540MBps so your computer with an SSD is greater than 5x faster.
    • Regular SSD hard drives are limited 600MBps which is the speed limit of the sata controllers on a motherboard.
    • The new M.2 (m dot 2) drives use the motherboard bus which allows data to move at 2GBps which is nearly 4x faster than the top SSD.
    • This new type of connection is called NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) developed by Intel, Samsung, Sandisk, Dell, and Seagate.
    • Read more about NVMe here..

      2Tb SSD (Solid State Drive), R/W 540Mb/s+$899

    >

a second drive, this is usually a standard hard disk Drive (HDD), this allows you to have a high speed SSD for your main drive.

The operating system (Windows), programs and games generally are stored on the primary drive (usually an SSD) and the secondary drive is reserved for large amounts of data like movies, redundant games, music pictures and more. This setup dramatically improves the overall performance of your computer.

VR technology and graphics card requirements.....

The birth of PC VR will no doubt spawn a legion of video card upgrades.
Oculus recommends a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290, at the very least, for VR gaming, but you’ll want something even beefier than that if you plan to turn up the graphical bells and whistles or future-proof your rig.

      1050Watt Power Supply +$89

Larger power supplies offer greater efficiency, reduced power consumption and add life to your system. The larger the power supply the better components and the operational noise is significantly reduced. If you intend to add additional Hard Disk Drives and larger graphics cards in the future consider getting a larger power supply than what you may originally need and your system will last longer.

Wireless is not the optimal for gaming because it increases latency = the time it takes your mouse click to reach the game server, this is bad for online gaming.

Ethernet (lan) over power eliminates this delay for better gaming.

The Ethernet Over Power Adaptor creates a Lan connection over your power lines. (= no latency)

A device plugs into your modem then into the power point, a second device is than plugged into the power point in the room that you need internet. You then plug an ethernet cable into the adaptor and you are connected to your modem.

    * Computer Town Australia does not recommend Norton 360

With over 22 years of computer servicing you get to know what works and what doesn't.

We have found that Norton Antivirus and Security (not 360) are the most effective and least intrusive antivirus product.

The product does not bog the system down and give you useless popup reminders like other products and most of all it works with a rating of over 94% effectiveness.

All warranty is return to base

Warranties are a part of life, as much as we select the best possible brand or product based on our 22 year experience things can still go wrong but we have you covered.

We cover all physical parts of the computer and we do this with new exchange items in most cases while you wait, unlike other companies who generally return the faulty product to the supplier which can take anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks = long time, no gaming.

For our distance customers we pay the return freight.

A modern computer is generally very reliable but things can go wrong, backing your information up is the single most important thing that is a must for modern day computing.

How would you be if you lost a years worth of work, your personal photos or everything. We have seen hard disk drives fail and virusus destroy the entire contents of a computer.

Data recovery starts at around $800 for a broken hard disk and there are virusus out there that will destroy all content on your computer......*** you have been WARNED ***
