Virus removal.

Viruses, the vein of everyone’s existence, but don’t despair we have you covered in 99% of cases.

Will I lose all my information?

In most cases no, there is only one extremely serious virus called the crypto-locker virus. This is nasty and 95% of the time unfortunately you will loose your information, so hopefully you have done the right thing and backed up your data.

Why do they make viruses?

The simple answer is because they can. There is a number of people that use virus's for monetary gain or malicious attacks on people.

those aweful people who make virus’s make money in many ways, firstly they can steal you bank account details, PayPal info, and your identity to name a few.

People don't usually know that their personal information has been stolen until it is too late, so do not underestimate the importance of a good antivirus.

My antivirus just ran out, how long will it take to get a virus?

Firstly, you should never let your antivirus run out, why would you take that risk? You can drive an uninsured car and nothing may never happen but if it did, how would you be? It’s just not worth the risk.

When your antivirus runs out it simply means that your subscription has run out, or you will get no new updates from that time on. The antivirus program generally continues to work but without any new virus information so if a new virus comes out then the chance of you getting it is very high.

What are all these popups and how did I get them?

Popups are a form of malware (malicious software), their role can vary significantly from simple advertising, and browser redirection to Ransome ware. Ransome ware is particularly malicious, it stops yu from doing anything on your computer unless you pay a fee, what ever you do don’t pay them or ring them

If you have popups rest assured, you have a virus and you should get it sorted before things get nasty.

The quickest way to get popups and a virus is to install a program that promises to speed up or optimise your computer, this type of program generally does not exist and is 99% sure to get you a virus.

Signing up to seemingly harmless websites can also infect you, as well be wary of torrent websites, make sure you read the comments before you download anything.

Why didn't my antivirus stop the virus?

Not all antivirus’s are created equal, some are better than others and some don’t work at all and there is no antivirus that is 100% effective, remember that you get what you pay for, so if you are paying nothing for your antivirus than you can expect exactly that: nothing.

What other precautions can I take to stop virus and adware?

Not all antivirus’s are created equal, some are better than others and some don’t work at all and there is no antivirus that is 100% effective, remember that you get what you pay for, so if you are paying nothing for your antivirus than you can expect exactly that: nothing.

Firstly, have an up to date good antivirus. We find Norton Internet security the best, and Norton antivirus the second best but Norton 360 one of the most useless. This is from our experience and we service on average 80 computers a week and have been doing so for 22 years. Everyone that works at Computer Town uses Norton Internet Security.

Secondly, install an add-blocker. An add-blocker simply stops all the pop-ups from a website and also stops scripts from running from a website. Scripts are the hidden programs that install from a website that can put viruses on your computer

The safest way to get an add-blocker program is from the google chrome web store (google it). Of course you must be running google chrome for it to be effective. You can also get add-block programs fro Firefox by searching “addblock for firefox” but be very careful doing this, you could mistakngly download a nasty virus.
